Lance drills open the osteotomy. The spear-shaped point penetrates dense cortical bone at the crest without skating across the surface, which is exactly where a conventional twist drill loses control and the entry point drifts off the planned position. Because the first cut fixes the axis for every drill that follows, the lance drill effectively determines the angulation of the finished implant, and this is why it is used as a dedicated instrument rather than being replaced by the smallest twist drill in a surgical kit. The set carries four diameters — Ø2.0, Ø2.5, Ø2.8 and Ø3.2 mm — allowing the clinician to select the entry size that matches the implant system and bone density in play, and the larger sizes also serve as crestal or cortical drills to relieve dense bone at the ridge before the main sequence begins. Each drill is laser-marked with depth reference bands along the shaft so penetration can be read directly during the cut, and sits on a red silicone stopper with the diameter engraved on the tray face beside it.
