The two beaks carry mating concave and convex faces, so wire drawn between them is bent along a smooth curve instead of being kinked at a point. That is what allows arch form to be adjusted or restored without introducing unwanted torque — the wire keeps its original orientation in the bracket slots while its curvature changes. Three grooves are cut into the tip at .016", .018" and .022", so a round or rectangular wire of the matching dimension seats in its own channel and is held on its long axis rather than being flattened. It is the contouring counterpart to the loop-forming pliers earlier on G-15: those create discrete loops, this one shapes the arch as a whole.
