The Mershon band pusher answers that with a short pad of deep cross-hatched serrations set at an angle to the shank, so the pad can be laid flat against the occlusal or gingival edge of the band while the handle stays clear of the opposing arch. The heavy tapered handle gives a full palm grip for controlled, direct pressure rather than the fine finger control a plier would offer.
