The working end pairs a stepped cylindrical beak against a flat beak. Each step is a fixed diameter, so a loop or curve bent around a given step comes out the same size every time — which is what makes the plier suited to retainer wire and to adjusting the inner bow of a facebow, where left and right must match. The flat opposing beak holds the wire square while the step does the forming, and the stepped profile lets the operator move between three radii without changing instruments.
